I’m enjoying an intense few days at a legal conference this week. Being away from the office, even for a few days, is a great way to re-energize yourself and your passion for your business. While traveling, I began reading Designing Your Life by Bill Burnett and Dave Evans.

Early in the book, one of the exercises the book suggests is to reflect on your workview and your lifeview. It seems to be a good way to begin the reflection process on where you are and where you want to go.

Workview and Lifeview Reflections

Rather than try to summarize, it’s easier to just show you:

  1. Write a short reflection about your Workview. This should take about thirty minutes. Shoot for about 250 words – less than a page of typed writing.
  2. Write a short reflection on your Lifeview. This should also take no more than thirty minutes and be 250 words or so.
  3. Read over your Lifeview and Workview, and answer each of these questions:

a. Where do your views on work and life complement one another?

b. Where do they clash?

c. Does one drive the other? How?

The exercise essentially asks you to write a couple of short blog posts about your workview and lifeview. You should pick up the book to get more information on what Workview and Lifeview are. The background provided by the book is really helpful for both of these reflections.

I’m not finished with the book yet, but so far it seems to be a good book about designing the life you want to live.
