Tom Brady is the game-winning quarterback once again. You can peruse any sports website this morning and you'll see a variety of stats from his 10 appearances in the Super Bowl. He's even got more wins in the big game than all other franchises. New England's got 6 with Tom Brady, and 0 without him. As I was watching the game, I was wondering what we could learn from it. Early on, when the game was in the balance, it was tough to tell what the lasting lesson would be. But as Tampa Bay took control of the game, it became clear that Tom Brady's bet on a new team this year was the winning bet. In his post-game comments, his first message was that this was a team effort, not an individual effort.

So, Who's On Your TEAM?

Working with small businesses, one of the most important issues we tackle is who's on their TEAM. Broken down, your TEAM is Trusted Experts, Authorities, and Mentors. Just like Tom Brady and the Bucs, your business is a TEAM. Even if it's just you running your business, there are others you need around you.

  • When you need them, who is the expert you turn to?
  • Learning to improve your business, who are the authorities you should study?
  • Never go it alone, you need a mentor to help guide you.

Last night we saw the ultimate example of a team coming together to win the biggest game. Seeing the way they all came together should inspire you this Monday morning to look at who you are working with.

Don't Be Afraid to Move On

A more individualized lesson from Tom Brady for your business is not to be afraid to move on. He spent 20 years with the New England Patriots. They were wildly successful. They won 6 titles and went to 9 Super Bowls. But after all the success, they decided it was time to move on.

Rather than retire, Brady opted for a new challenge in Tampa. You and your business can learn from this as well. Have you been employed by someone else for 20 years and are ready for a new challenge? Maybe you're inspired to start your own business after all this time? Now is as good a time as any to get started on that new challenge.

And if you're already running your own business? Maybe it's time to examine your business and its successes. Are there other lines you could expand into? A new or modified version of what is already successful? With the right TEAM in place, now's the time to try some new opportunities.
