I recently saw a post on social media (I wish I could find it again, but the timeline flew by too quickly), discussing the four people that every startup needs. In December, I wrote about the four people that I think you need on your team when starting a business. Using the acronym “CALM“, I think everyone needs:

  • Computer
  • Accountant
  • Lawyer
  • Mentor

These four areas focus on the business side of starting up your company. But the social media post got me thinking about the content and marketing side of the business as well.

Four More People on Your Team

The post I saw suggested that a startup needs a,

  • Math Person
  • Art Person
  • Video Person
  • Written Word Person

Aside from needing a better acronym, I think the list is also a good suggestion. We both agree on the importance of a “math” person, an accountant. The financial foundation of a strong company requires a good accountant and financial advisor to make sure the books are in good order.

The other three suggestions are very important from a content and marketing standpoint. An Art person can help you design graphics and marketing. Wherever I turn these days, it seems that video marketing is becoming more common. And to pair with the artwork and videos, you need well-written content to convey the message of your business.

Since I last wrote about this, maybe I should go back and change my previous recommendations. The four people on your team should include the business side of things, but you shouldn’t ignore the marketing and creative side of your business as well.
